Researcher-Writer and Editor for an ENGO Consolidated Position Paper on the Development of Domestic Access and Benefit Sharing Policy
When: June-July 2010
Environment Canada has invited the Canadian Environmental Network to coordinate the drafting of a position paper on the development of Access and Benefit Sharing (ABS) policy in Canada. To gather views of ENGOs, Aboriginal peoples and key stakeholders the RCEN will coordinate a teleconference consultation and issue a request for written submissions from members.
The resulting consolidated position paper will include:
- A summary of the results of the stakeholder consultation
- Consolidated ENGO positions and recommendations on the development of domestic ABS policy within the context of international ABS Protocol negotiations within the Convention on Biological Diversity

Background Information
The United Nations Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) was negotiated with a view to mitigate biodiversity loss on a global scale.
The objectives of the Convention are biodiversity conservation, the sustainable use of biological resources, and the equitable sharing of benefits derived from the use of genetic resources. Within the framework of the Convention, Parties address various aspects of biodiversity. The CBD focuses its analyses and activities around ecosystems, and particularly forest, arid lands and marine ecosystems. Some of the main issues tackled by the CBD include the study of the Convention’s application; protected areas; biosecurity; exotic invasive species; and access and benefit sharing of genetic resources.
